Racing games have always been used as showpieces of the amount of visual detail developers could pack into games running on new hardware and software.
Apex is the first step in Microsoft's commitment to creating incredible Forza experiences for Windows 10 PC gamers.
With Microsoft newly committed to following potential customers on whatever device they happen to be using, the Redmond company is again targeting the PC. It will feature wet weather and night variants.
"This is our opportunity to craft a new experience with a very specific intention of welcoming a new group of gamers into the Forza franchise", said Andy Beaudoin, design director on Apex, in a presentation for the press at Microsoft's Xbox spring showcase in San Francisco.
"Arriving in the Windows Store this spring, Forza Motorsport 6: Apex is a free, curated standalone experience for Windows 10 that provides fans with a diverse tour of what Forza Motorsport 6 has to offer, including trademark innovations iconic to the Forza franchise, such as Drivatar opponents and Forzavista cars, as well as new ways to play and compete", Microsoft said. Nevertheless, according to The Seattle Times, Microsoft is bringing another of its big Xbox exclusives to Windows 10 this year.
The free Forza game for Windows 10 has a new objective and scoring system with each event being unique. In it, the Times discusses a recent Microsoft event where they recommitted to the PC with a few announcements, Apex being one among them. A separate project to link Microsoft's PC-focused Windows store with the selection of games and applications available on Xbox has not been completed.
Starting by porting the full versions of games, rather than free to play versions, would seem like a good idea to me.
