Pope Francis attends his weekly audience in St. Peter's Square on November 26, 2014 in Vatican City, Vatican. They also discussed about how the Pope was thinking of joining the social media website. According to Instagram, his visit to the U.S.in the fall of 2015 generated 21 million posts, likes and comments from nine million people.
The CEO of Instagram, Systrom, was online when the Pope posted his first image on the site. With three posts in the first 24 hours it doesn't look like there's going to be an overwhelming number of updates - but the Pope is rather busy on Sundays after all.
In addition to the one seeking prayer, Pope Francis has made only one other post so far, another of him in kneeling in prayer. CNN reports the Pope had 100,000 Instagram followers within an hour of launching his account.
Perhaps the pontiff, 79, was charmed by Instagram founder Kevin Systrom when the two met at the Vatican last month. "Franciscus" is the Pope's Insta handle, and of course, it will be handled by the Vatican members even though it is different from the official Vatican account.
"Pope Francis joins a global Instagram community who share a common passion for creativity and expression - his messages of humility and compassion will leave a lasting mark".
Pope Francis previously joined Twitter and now has 8.9 million followers.
Pope Francis has expanded his online presence by gracing Instagram with his holiness. In 2013, four days after he was elected pope, he took over his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI's Twitter account, which was opened the year before.
