Trump quickly tweeted "Bernie Sanders, who has lost most of his leverage, has totally sold out to Crooked Hillary Clinton". "That's what democracy is about".
His endorsement, coming five weeks after Clinton became the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, brought the most prominent holdout in the party's liberal wing into her camp.
Before his endorsement, Sanders told the crowd he was "proud of the campaign we ran here in New Hampshire", and reminded them that he had "won in 22 states, and when the roll call at the Democratic nomination is announced, it will show that we won nearly 1,900 delegates", which he said, "is not enough to win the nomination".
Sanders had campaigned to the left of Clinton, criticising the US's inequality gap, Wall Street and the healthcare system. Sanders responded, "Would she be interested in being my vice president?"
Some remain hopeful that Sanders' campaign will continue as the Democratic National Convention draws closer.
Sanders and Clinton pitched themselves as joining forces to defeat Donald Trump, with Clinton declaring, "We are stronger together!"
According to the New York Times, an anonymous source claimed that some high-ranking Democrats said that Mr. Sanders "could become chairman of the committee that will work on trying to carry out a proposed $15 federal minimum wage".
Clinton is expected to take the Democratic Party's official nomination during the Democratic Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania during the week of July 25. Going forward he can mobilize his supporters to keep the heat on Clinton whenever her knee-jerk corporatism and militarism get the better of her.
