Police officers in three different states have been ambushed around the time-frame of the Dallas shooting that left five officers dead and many others injured.
A man claiming he is angry over police treatment of African Americans indiscriminately shot at passing cars on a Tennessee highway today. All those shot were white, police confirmed.
In south Georgia, police said an officer was ambushed Friday when he went to an apartment complex to investigate a report of a break-in. Police say the suspect fired three times and that the officer was shot at least once. He killed a woman driving down the highway named Jennifer Rooney, a 44-year-old mother of two who was delivering the morning's newspapers. As the officer was walking back to his auto, the suspect exited his vehicle and walked briskly towards the officer. Soctt was armed with a semi-automatic rifle and a pistol, a local CBS affiliate reported.
There's nothing to indicate the Valdosta shooting is related to the one in Dallas, Childress said, though he noted it is still early in the investigation.
Scott, who is black, was wounded in the shootout with police, remains hospitalised and has not yet been charged. The shooter was also shot in the exchange and is in stable condition, Childress said.
"You start to wonder", the police chief said.
Ballwin Police Department Chief Kevin B. Scott said the suspect took off in his auto, ultimately ending the pursuit on foot. "But any motive of why this happened this morning, it would be speculation".
The Ballwin police officer was walking back to his squad auto when the suspect got out of his vehicle and ambushed the officer with a firearm before fleeing the scene, an unidentified source told KSDK's Jacob Long.
On Friday, a cop was attacked during a traffic stop in St. Louis.
"A suspect was reported to be in custody after a foot chase", and a "weapon was recovered", other media outlets reported.
The suspect was describe by police as a tall, thin black male driving a blue Ford Taurus with temporary IL tags.
Police have not named the suspect, and they said they're still uncertain about his motive.
The Dallas attack was not the only violence against law enforcement.
