Pitcher Francisco Liriano was replaced on the Toronto Blue Jays roster for the remainder of the American League Division Series (ALDS). The two teams have history after last year's ALDS, Jose Bautista's bat-flip and an incident between Bautista and Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor. But the Jays had moved on. "And obviously with the circumstances against this team that we kind of had some bad blood against, I kind of felt it was good baseball being played, and we kind of put our emotions aside and played good baseball".
Russell Martin added: "Revenge is the best revenge".
On May 15, Odor famously punched Bautista to spark a brawl in Texas, and the broadcast of Sunday's game showed a fan-made sign declaring "I would rather get punched in May than get knocked out in October".
With the Jays and Texas Rangers deadlocked at 6-6 in the ninth inning, manager John Gibbons sent closer Roberto Osuna into the game in the top half of the inning, desperately hoping the 21-year-old would be able to hold the fort for his offence to provide some walk-off dramatics in the bottom half. Really, it was a tough September. Thus it was that Donaldson, the reigning AL MVP, strode to the plate to lead off the 10th inning and promptly stroked a one-hop double off the right-centre field fence. Toronto tied it up in the bottom of the sixth on a passed ball, but the Jays couldn't get back out in front in the following three innings. But while the expected doesn't always happen in a seven-game set, the best team usually wins.
The Blue Jays have outscored (27-12) and out-homered (10-3) the opposition in the playoffs. In Game 2, they slugged four home runs off Darvish, the most he's allowed in his career. They got blown out in game 1, beaten in game 2, and couldn't complete a simple out in game 3, allowing the Blue Jays to win 7-6 with a walk off run.
Kevin Pillar, Ezequiel Carrera and Encarnacion, who ended the wild-card game with a three-run homer in the 11th inning, hit solo homers in a five-batter span in the fifth.
Texas took the lead in the sixth inning on a two-run double by Mitch Moreland.
The Rangers will hope to find their offensive groove and stave off elimination in the do-or-die game for them in Toronto. Matt Bush pitched a ideal eighth.
Lobaton, starting because regular catcher Wilson Ramos is out for the rest of the season with a torn knee ligament, last hit a post-season home run in 2013, when he was playing for Tampa Bay.
"I threw a little bit to the side". "To be here to pitch in a game like (Game 3), I'm just blessed with the opportunity to go out there and compete".
"It doesn't feel good for us (coaches), it doesn't feel good for those players".
The American League Championship Series begins on Friday, with the Blue Jays traveling either to Cleveland or Boston. As recently as a week ago, it was unclear if the Jays would even get an opportunity to face the Rangers again this season, let alone advance to the ALDS.
