Jacquizz Rodgers, who rushed for 101 yards on 30 carries against the Carolina Panthers in his sixth career start is expected to get the nod again this week against the San Francisco 49ers this week. On Wednesday, running back Doug Martin, defensive linemen Robert Ayers and Clinton McDonald still were not practicing, leaving doubt their availability for Sunday's matchup with the 49ers. Martin suffered a setback to his hamstring injury over the weekend of the team's bye week and has no apparent timetable for a return.
Getting McDonald back would put the Bucs at full strength at defensive tackle, getting back two starters who were sidelined from last week's win against Carolina.
Shorts has played 11 snaps in two games and has one catch for 12 yards on the season.
"Yeah, he was just an unbelievable player in college and very, very hard to defend", Kelly said.
"He's a handful, and we have to be very aware of him in their run game because really the run game sets up everything else up for them". The Bucs also signed running back Antone Smith on Tuesday. Tampa Bay WR Mike Evans has 449 yards receiving and four TDs through five games.
"Every time with these injuries, guys just keep stepping up", Tampa Bay quarterback Jameis Winston said. This is the moment he's been waiting for. "And they know that".
Coach Dirk Koetter revealed Doug Martin (hamstring) suffered a setback over the weekend and will not play Week 7 against the 49ers. Receiver Vincent Jackson is also on the IR after suffering the same injury.
