India produced a clinical performance over five days to register a comprehensive 246-run victory over England in the second Test to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series on Monday at Visakhapatnam.
With this India have gone 1-0 up in the series.
"It wasn't a great moment to fight so hard, so was disappointing to get out at the end", Alastair Cook said.
Resuming their second innings on 67-2, England were never going to go for the target of 405 on a pitch that wasn't the worst we have seen in India in the recent past, but had a lot of uneven bounce nevertheless. That was exactly what we did and from there on the bowlers were always on top.
"There wasn't much intent from the [England] batters and on that kind of wicket, the question you asked about my batting, the plan was to have intent", he said.
"I was pretty confident that I was striking the ball well, so I can take on the bowlers before they can put pressure on us and we can put runs on the board". He took one wicket in the first innings but in the second innings he pitched the ball at the rough and took three wickets.
The Indian Test captain also heaped praise on debutant off-spinner Jayant Yadav.
Zafar Ansari completed a match every bit as ignominious as Duckett's when Ashwin skidded a flat offbreak into his off stump for a duck, before Jayant produced a carbon copy of England's demise in the first innings, trapping Stuart Broad and James Anderson with consecutive lbws.
"Yes, definitely that's why we play five bowlers, we don't play only spinners, we play fast bowlers as well, because we understand their contribution is also important", Kohli said on the key role played by pacers.
"The biggest positives are how the fast bowlers bowled and Jayant's debut". The problem for England, though, is that the two replacement options are Gary Ballance, who has been very bad in the last few matches, before being dropped, and Jos Buttler, who has played little to no first-class cricket and hasn't really convinced in the Test match game. "So it was lovely to have all five bowlers who can pick up wickets in crucial stages", Kohli added.
The action now shifts to Mohali for the third test starting on Saturday.
"We have been playing some really good cricket". We understand that. But at the same time We do not want to be too desperate. Day five, I don't think it will be easy to bat on because as we saw, cracks are opening up even on day four, it was hard.
Tomorrow we will definitely have to come hard at them and we are prepared for it.
