In what may give the opposition fresh ammunition to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA regime over the demonetisation move, BJP's Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy on Tuesday said that adequate preparation was not there in place prior to implementing this decision, adding the harassment which people are going through could have been avoided.
Significantly for NDA point of view, Shiv Sena, which has been critical of the Government move, supported the demonetisation move in the meeting.
"Prime Minister's request is for cooperation, similar to what they did for GST (Bill)".
Sharma, who is also the BJP's national media convenor, took on Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi, Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the left parties and the Samajwadi Party for criticising the government's move on demonetisation.
However, they could not arrive at a consensus on West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee's proposal to hand over a protest memorandum in this regard to President Pranab Mukherjee. "Anandrao Adsul, Deputy Leader of the Shiv Sena in Lok Sabha, attended the meeting and supported the Government decisions", a source said.
"If the earlier Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes will be replaced by new Rs 500/Rs 1,000/Rs 2,000 notes, how is it demonetisation?" The leaders will meet again on Wednesday. Leaders of the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Communist Party of India-Marxist, Communist Party of India, Janata Dal-United, Trinamool Congress, Nationalist Congress Party and the DMK were present at a meeting held here to deliberate on the issue. "Summary demonetization has shaken this trust and will likely impact India's economy well beyond the initial and widespread chaos", the statement notes, adding, "If it is the Government's case that high value denomination currency is used to hoard black money, then the decision to reissue new Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes does not make sense". He also dubbed the move as "Tughlaq raj" (dictatorship), while taking a dig at the Modi government.
"We will unearth this currency scam and taken on the government". "People are suffering", he said.
In the long run, this will also regularise political funding in the country, he said. Let all political parties debate it and come to a conclusion. "Polls happen separately. Let there be one election, simultaneous elections", he said.
