The DOJ said career prosecutors in Sessions' office would continue investigations and prosecutions until the new US attorneys are confirmed.

"We had a good meeting", he added.

"I am deeply saddened and surprised that the Trump Administration has fired Deirdre Daly, one of our nation's most capable, experienced and dedicated federal prosecutors", Blumenthal said in a statement. "I agreed to stay on", Bharara said at the time. I have already spoken to Senator Sessions, who is as you know is the nominee to be the attorney general. Sessions also asked him to stay, the prosecutor told The New York Times.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions asked the remaining U.S. Attorneys appointed by Barack Obama to resign on Friday.

This post has been updated to reflect the news that Bharara was sacked after refusing the resignation order.

Bharara was included in the group asked to leave, even though he said he had met with Trump before the Republican took office and had been asked to stay on.

Bharara's office also pursued former Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith, Deputy Majority Leader Tom Libous and many more.

That is why Bharara's possible departure is shocking to many people, including Assemblyman McLaughlin who said Bharara is good at weeding out corruption in Albany and elsewhere in NY.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Democrat of NY, said in a statement that he was "troubled" to learn of the resignation requests, especially for Bharara.

Bharara was once a Schumer aide.

About half the USA attorneys resigned after the Trump election in November.

Bharara's removal is especially surprising because Trump had personally asked that he stay on during his transition.

A day after being asked to quit by US President Donald Trump's administration, Preet Bharara, a high-profile Indian-American federal prosecutor was sacked on Saturday, a media report said.

Reached Friday afternoon, Rendon said she would call a reporter back. Mr. Hannity portrayed them as "saboteurs" from the "deep state" who were leaking secrets to hurt Mr. Trump. "Trump proposed it, Schumer endorsed and facilitated it", the person said.

Bharara's office declined comment late Friday on his future, and there was no immediate comment from the Justice Department specifically on his fate.
