The saddest part of the whole thing was that, according to the overnight Nielsen TV ratings, people were watching as the Premier Boxing Champions telecast on CBS outdid the National Basketball Association on ABC in the all important 18-49 demographic. And with Thurman holding up two belts.
Given that 2016 wasn't an especially memorable one for global boxing, this is the sort of fight that will light up this year. I felt I pushed the fight like a true champion.
This was just the second time that CBS showed prime-time boxing since February of 1978 when Leon Spinks upset Muhammad Ali.
"Its time that boxing returns to the people".

Before last night's big welterweight unification fight between Keith Thurman and Danny Garcia, a lot of people said the victor would emerge as THE best welterweight in the world today. Showtime - which has been reinvesting heavily in boxing - has pieced together something of a welterweight tournament, with Shawn Porter-Andre Berto scheduled for April and Kell Brook-Errol Spence slated for the spring. With this match, Thurman improved to 28-0 with 22 KOs, while Garcia saw his undefeated 33-1, 19 KOs down. You don't get these sporting events in boxing.
Garcia had success in the middle rounds winning two rounds back to back, but was unable to break the flow of the fight as it was simply Thurman's night. Ticket sales are threatening to surpass last month's UFC 208 as the arena's highest grossing non-Nets event, according to Gutmann. Ready to go down and lay their titles on the line - for the fight fans.
So there is that difference for this welterweight unification showdown at the box office.
In the co-feature, Erickson Lubin continued to make noise in the super welterweight division with a stunning fourth-round knockout of Jorge Cota. A few months ago with a million dollar bond issue on the table in New York, with the New York State Athletic Commission, this was a fight that was not happening at Barclays or across the river at Madison Square Garden.
Garcia responded to Thurman's big round 1 and caught him with some nice counter left hooks - as Thurman looked to hooker with the hooker in parts of the round.
"What really matters is how the fight starts", said Thurman. What happens, when we land our first big punches?
"He feels confident and I feel confident". I think eventually we will meet in the ring again.
"Garcia does go into fights as the underdog and finds a way to win".
Of course, Garcia sees the fight going his way. A once-beaten Leonard entered that fight as the WBC claimant, while Hearns, who had not lost in 32 outings, was the WBA's kingpin. The same could be said of Garcia.
"I baited him with the jab".
Thurman's metamorphosis from an all-offense knockout artist... to a knockout artist with some boxing skill... to a guy who wants to outbox everyone and never try to knock them out... hit another level of dismal fan satisfaction Saturday.
Take your pick and watch this one carefully.
"It was a tough fight", he said. He became an amateur champion before turning pro in 2007.
