Gboard, Google's attempt to further infiltrate your phone by way of a keyboard application, is rolling out an update this morning that will introduce a handful of new features, including GIF and emoji suggestions as you type, easier voice typing, Google Translate, and more keyboard themes.
Of course, it wouldn't be Gboard if we weren't treated to a suite of easy-to-access emoji and GIFs to spruce up what would normally be a plain-text message. To access, go to Gboard settings and select theme or press on the Theme icon in the quick features menu in the suggestion strip.
Need to text in more than one language? The new integrations will allow you to translate texts into other languages right from your keyboard. Finally, Gboard gets a deeper search integration, which will offer search suggestions based on what you type.
This presents all sorts of opportunities for near-instant cross-lingual communication - or just trolling your friend by seamlessly switching to a language neither of you understand. You can also share GIFs in supported apps, including Allo, Facebook Messenger, Hangouts, and Snapchat, Google notes.
Again, you notice the logic here?
The whole idea of Gboard is offering you access to tons of intelligence and Google services anywhere a keyboard is displayed, and today's updates show the real power of this platform. Google is positioning Gboard as a one stop solution for translating stuff as well. The Translate box from the quick start menu also supports pasted text, so you copy any text sent back to you to have it translated back into your native tongue. For themes, you also get new scenes to choose as backdrops along with a promise of more new themes to arrive in the future.
