On Friday, women's fashion retailer Bebe Stores announced that it would be closing down all of its brick-and-mortar stores by the end of May as the volatile retail sector claimed another victim.

"We may incur a loss in connection with this sale of our merchandise and inventory, but we can not estimate such loss at this time", the company said in the filing. Bebe operates 134 retail stores and 34 outlet stores across the country.

The exact number of stores was not immediately available.

Among the local Bebes closing are Tampa locations at WestShore Plaza and Tampa International Plaza, as well as a store at the Brandon Town Center Mall.

Store associates had in March confirmed to WWD the chainwide store closure plan.

Others chains that have shuttered all their stores or retrenched include Abercrombie & Fitch, BCBG, The Limited and Wet Seal.

Bebe also plans to liquidate all merchandise and fixtures within the stores, it said in a regulatory filing. As of mid-April, nine major retailers had filed for bankruptcy.

Bebe has not commented on the closure and there was no mention of it on the company's website Friday morning.

Bebe Stores Inc. started in 1976 and describes itself as staying true to its "assertive, provocative origins".

Its products included active wear, tops, dresses and accessories. The company last reported net sales of $101.9 million during the second quarter of its fiscal 2017, decreasing 16.8% from $122.4 million reported in the second-quarter a year-ago.
