The NCAA announced men's regional hockey sites for the next two seasons.
In 2019, the East Regional will be hosted by Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., the Midwest Regional will be held at PPL Center, Allentown, Pa. and the West Regional will be played at Scheels Center, Fargo, N.D.
Penn State also was awarded several NCAA championship events: The women's Frozen Four in 2022; the men's hockey regional in Allentown in 2018 and '19; the national fencing championships in 2018 and '21; the women's gymnastics regional in 2018 and '20; and the men's and women's cross country regional in 2018 and '20.
The exact dates for the Regionals will be announced at a later time. All four arenas are neutral sites with AHL-sized buildings that are an easy drive for most of New England's college hockey teams, and Bridgeport is also pretty close for several NY schools. The University of New Hampshire and Brown are among the New England hosts for the 2019 tournament.
One of the nation's premier ice facilities, Pegula Ice Arena opened in October 2013 and is the home of the Penn State men's and women's hockey teams.
ME has been shut out in its bid to host NCAA men's hockey tournament games at Portland's Cross Insurance Arena in 2019.
"Penn State prides itself on providing exceptional championship experiences for student-athletes", said Assistant AD Michael Cross, who oversees the men's and women's hockey programs.
Quinnipiac women's ice hockey made back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances in 2015 and 2016 before missing out in 2017. "It's an honor to have those efforts recognized with successful bids to host NCAA Championship events in our two newest sports and in two new, state-of-the-art facilities".
Boston last hosted the event in 2015, and the college hockey national semifinals and championship game most recently took place in The Hub in 2004 and 1998.
In 2018, Worcester, Massachusetts, and Bridgeport, Connecticut, each will host a men's hockey regional.
