Referee Keith Stroud will not officiate Gillingham's home game with Millwall on Saturday after his mistake at Newcastle.
Newcastle were stunned when Stroud forgot the rules and disallowed Ritchie's 30th-minute spot kick for encroachment.
But refereeing is one of them, and on Wednesday night referee Keith Stroud clearly had a serious lapse of concentration which left him feeling the wrath of Newcastle United's players and fans.
"As Matt Ritchie took the kick, Dwight Gayle encroached into the penalty area". However, he was not ordering for it to be retaken, but rather he awarded a free-out to Burton.
It read: "Unfortunately the referee has misapplied the Law".
Ritchie netted his 15th goal of the campaign in Wednesday night's 1-0 win over Burton to return Newcastle to the top of the table.
After huge protests from the Newcastle players and staff, Stroud eventually went to his linesman and fourth official for advice but the weird decision to award Burton an indirect free-kick withstood.
Matt Ritchie's victor fired Newcastle top of the Championship again.
"We are as critical as anybody at times but once they come out and say, "yes, we made the mistake", that's it, you move on".
But it was the first-half goal which Ritchie had chalked off which was the game's real talking point.
"The referee and me have been talking".
Matt Ritchie had a penalty ruled out after half an hour in controversial circumstances that briefly threatened to derail the Magpies' push for the title. We can't change what happened.
I think nearly fifty thousand paying customers might have a different view and safe to say we surely won't be seeing any of these clowns at St James Park in the future.
The Congolese defender put in a solid performance, and he reacted on Twitter after Newcastle registered the three points.
