The DLL in question, wuaueng.dll, is revised from time to time, after which you'll need to repatch, because it resets the value of "supported CPU" back from "1" to "0" - so it's not ideal, but it's better than having to succumb to live with an insecure PC due to Microsoft's tactics to force people into upgrading to Windows 10. The latest move by Redmond is to make the Windows update process more predictable and clear, especially to corporate firms which plan their operation in advance, and to align it with the Office update.
Microsoft also shared that the Windows 10 System Center Configuration Manager will be prepared to support the updates.
We now know this targeted release month based on news from Microsoft today.
"We've. heard our customers want more predictability and simplicity from this update servicing model to help make deployments and updates of Microsoft products easier", Bernando Caldas, the general manager of Windows Commercial Marketing, wrote in a blog post.
The company said the update also allows users to broadcast their gameplay on Windows 10 and Xbox One via a built-in broadcasting technology.
While this announcement is directed towards business customers it does have a consumer impact. Although Windows Insider will soon get these new features in upcoming preview builds. It is possible that the Redstone 3 update will be finalized in September but released in October 2017. Under the new plan, future updates will arrive in March or September each year, and Microsoft says each feature release will be serviced and supported for 18 months.
For users at home, the feature updates are not likely to bring major overhauls and will probably just add minor fixes and security upgrades. The two updates will roll out each March and September, confirmed the company. It will also ultimately mean that all Windows software will be Windows 10 and there is not much anyone can do about it. The OS, in this case, Windows 10, tries to be smart and determine which processes and programs are important to the user. Stability efforts could go a long way towards improving the upgrades between feature updates.
Like with many "smart" and automated systems like this, it isn't going to be flawless.
The Windows 10 Creators Update, then, formed the first release under the new schedule even if that wasn't public knowledge at the time.
