The news of Whitmire's departure was first reported by Muppets' fan site Tough Pigs.
His distinguishable nasal voice has become a trademark of the Muppets, so what will Kermit the Frog sound like now?
A spokesperson for Muppets Studio confirmed Whitmire's departure and that Matt Vogel will take over as Kermit the Frog. He has been the steady voice of the fan-favorite Muppet for over 27 years.
He also lent his voice to '80s Robot in 2011 movie The Muppets, and as Karmit imitator Constantine in 2014's Muppets Most Wanted.
Matt has worked with The Muppets Studio since the 1990s, performing as an assistant puppeteer for Sesame Street favourite Ernie alongside Steve. They are also concerned about what will happen to his other characters which he had inherited (like Beaker), and which he originated (like Rizzo). In the meantime, compare previous Kermit performances from Henson, Whitmire, and longtime understudy Artie Esposito in the compilation below.
Vogel has been doing voice work for some time, too. He started in the late 1990's, so he has plenty of experience and passion that he'll bring to the role.
