While finishing that thought, the man looked at them and then started running toward the fence. After seeing the sergeant, the suspect fled the helicopter, heading over a fence and into a nearby park, Reimann said.
"Immediately I thought, it's a little hot to have this hoodie on, and just as he walks by our auto and looks at us and just got past that's when he pulled the gray mask over his face".
The instructor and the student escaped the man by jumping into a helicopter, and police shot the suspect dead in a field after he tried to run in a field, according to Oregon Live.
The gunman allegedly ordered one aviation student out of the helicopter at gunpoint and fired a shot into the ground, Reimann said.
"He jumped in", Reimann said.
The person died at the scene. The man who was killed hasn't yet been identified by police. There were no reports of other injuries. "HIO has resumed airport operations", the statement read. The man did not reveal his plans to the flight instructor and student, he said.
The 95-acre airport is home to over 25 businesses, including flight schools, aircraft charter services, air ambulances and corporate flight departments.
