Spider-Man: Homecoming sees Tom Holland and Marisa Tomei reprising their roles from Captain America: Civil War as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Aunt May, alongside Marvel veterans Robert Downey Jr.as Tony Stark, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts and Chris Evans as Captain America.
Though the Vulture was marketed as the main antagonist of Spider-Man: Homecoming, there were actually a handful of villains introduced like the two Shockers as well as the Tinkerer. This brings the film's total domestic earnings to $56.9 million, making the music-driven heist movie Wright's highest earning film yet. Despite the reliability of superhero movies at the box office, "Homecoming" could have been seen as a big bet for all parties involved.
In a summer season when many tentpoles have been clobbered by critics, Homecoming boasts a 94 percent certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as nabbing a franchise-best A CinemaScore from audiences.
At the specialty box office, Michael Showalter's The Big Sick continued to impress, moving into the top 10 as it expanded into 326 theaters.
The reboot also added a further $140 million from global markets, including $25.8 million in South Korea, $12 million in Mexico and $11.8 million in the UK. This weekend it's expected to make $2.1 million from 941 locations.
And among other superhero movies, "Wonder Woman" moved past the fifth "Pirates of the Caribbean" film to become the fourth-biggest film of the year worldwide, at $745.8 million.
Overall, the summer box office stands at about $2.3 billion, or 8% lower than a year ago. "Spider-Man" is one of three major summer hits thus far, following the Marvel-Disney sequel "Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2" and the Warner Bros.
