"In fact, he called me 'Uncle Bill'".
Daulton was born on January 3, 1962 in Arkansas City, Kansas.
Mr. Daulton played 14½ of his 15 major league seasons with Philadelphia and finished his career with the 1997 World Series champion Florida Marlins, batting.389 (7 for 18) with two doubles and one homer in a seven-game series against Cleveland.
Daulton was a key member of the Phillies team that reached the 1993 World Series, losing to the Toronto Blue Jays in six games.
He won the Silver Slugger Award in 1992, and was named to the All-Star team in '92, '93 and '95. He is the only catcher in Phillies history to drive in 100 runs twice during his career.
Daulton continued to be plagued with injuries after that 1993 season, although he made his third-straight All-Star Game in 1995. As CSN Philly recalled, Daulton, who had spent his entire major league career in Philadelphia beforehand, was the missing piece on a talented Marlins team that needed an "intangible" that could turn them from a good team into a great team. He set all those records in 1993.
He is also survived by four children, Summer Daulton, Savannah Daulton, Zachary Daulton, and Darren Daulton II. "You will be missed my friend, always enjoyed your presence at the ballpark".
A teary-eyed Dykstra went on to read a letter that Daulton wrote on his behalf to a judge when Dykstra pleaded guilty to bankruptcy fraud, among other federal charges, in 2012. Pitcher Curt Schilling, who blossomed when he began throwing to Mr. Daulton in 1992, fell under his spell, frequently calling his battery mate "the best catcher in baseball". Daulton also was selected as the starting catcher on the All-Vet team in 2003.
'All of us at the Phillies are saddened to hear of Darren's passing, ' Phillies Chairman David Montgomery said in a statement. "Darren was the face of our franchise in the early 1990's". "He told me when Dutch stepped in that locker room everyone on that team looked at him and said, 'There's our leader'". He responded to all three challenges.
'One of my toughest decisions as team president was to approve his trade to the Marlins in July of 1997, ' he added.
