According to Astros president Reid Ryan, the team approached the Rangers about swapping their home series against each other.
The Rangers offered to host the series at Globe Life Park where the Astros would play as the home team and earn all the revenue. With the storm expected to linger for days, and with the Houston metro area under an emergency evacuation, playing the games Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights at Houston's Minute Maid Park as scheduled is out of the question. The latest edition of the Lone Star Series will commence at Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays.
Meanwhile, if indeed the Mets series is moved to Tropicana Field, the Astros will wind up playing 19-games on the road and not returning to Minute Maid Park until September 15 when they are scheduled to host the Seattle Mariners.
The? Houston Texans? flew to Dallas after their preseason game Saturday in New Orleans instead of returning home and have said they'll stay there until conditions improve enough for them to come back to Houston.
The Astros and Texas Rangers will play their next series at Tampa Bay's Tropicana Field after catastrophic flooding hit Houston from Hurricane Harvey. Hundreds took to Twitter to voice their dissatisfaction, including Astros pitcher Lance McCullers, who suggested the Rangers were motivated by greed.
Texas general manager Jon Daniels told 105.3 The Fan Monday that the switch wouldn't be fair to Rangers fans that had tickets to the September series. It had nothing to do with looking for a competitive advantage. "We were willing to play this series anywhere the Astros and Major League Baseball wanted, including here in Arlington".
Daniels said the site of a baseball game in light of the ongoing natural disaster was not the club's priority. The Astros are in Anaheim and also will fly to Dallas while a decision is made on when and where the series will be played. One of which is somewhat ironic, if not cruelly so: Matt Harvey is tentatively scheduled to make his first start since going on the disabled list in June.
