Meanwhile, Florida's Department of Health has licensed two more medical marijuana treatment centers.
Chemung County is reportedly getting a medical marijuana dispensary.
The five first companies to register and to form the Medical Cannabis Industry Alliance are New York Canna, Valley Agriceuticals, Citify Medical and Ferrell Pharmaceuticals.
Minnesota's two medical marijuana growers received state approval Wednesday to continue supplying cannabis to patients, even though one was ensnared in a criminal case involving ex-employees who allegedly smuggled a half-million dollars worth of cannabis oil out of the state.
The state Department of Health said Tuesday that there now are more than 25,000 certified patients and over 1,000 registered practitioners in New York's medical marijuana program.
In 2016 a lawsuit was filed by the first five companies which were already collaborating with the state.
"The addition of these registered organizations will make it easier for patients across the state to obtain medical marijuana, improve the affordability of medical marijuana products through the introduction of new competition and increase the variety of medical marijuana products available to patients", said Dr. Howard Zucker, commissioner of the state Department of Health. The company said they didn't have a comment at this time.
Ehlinger said the Health Department has received requests to permit medical marijuana for additional conditions such as autism, dementia and peripheral neuropathy.
Several companies on the list plan to operate in Nassau and Suffolk counties, with as many as four new dispensaries about to crop up on the Island.
Valley Agriceuticals will manufacture in Orange County and have dispensing facilities in Kings, Oneida, Suffolk, and Dutchess Counties.
Although the demand is not very high, NY continues to grow its number of suppliers for medical marijuana. As of August 1, there are 25,736 certified patients and 1,139 registered practitioners in the program. Since then the number of NY patients certified for the drug has grown from 14,7992 to 25,736, a 72 percent increase.
