After Irving requested a trade from Cleveland, the Cavs reportedly desired Eric Bledsoe, Josh Jackson and a first-round pick for Irving, but Arizona Sports' John Gambadoro reported that Phoenix refused to include Jackson in such a trade.
Now we can talk all day about who made out better in the trade, but this is about Kyrie and what possible, justified reasoning he had for causing this trade to happen.
In exchange the Cavaliers received Crowder and Thomas - the two-time All-Star who won hearts in Boston with a big game that belied his small stature and his determination to pursue his playoff dream even after the sudden death of his sister in a road accident. LeBron James obviously played a major role in Cleveland winning that championship, but Irving didn't necessarily play the role of "Robin" to James' "Batman". "[The Celtics] want to win the whole thing, and the move to get Kyrie is basically ownership and [general manager] Danny [Ainge] saying to fans, 'we're going to try to win this thing now, get on board, '" CBS Boston reported.
If James ends up leaving the Cavaliers once again, Crowder will not provide the same star power once offered by Irving.
At 25-years-old, Kyrie Irving averaged 25 points per game last season on his way to another All-Star Game appearance. It seems unlikely that the covers could be fixed to display Irving in his new Celtics uniform. The internet seemingly turned the trade into a joke when users generated a myriad of memes and videos at Irving's expense.
Last but certainly not least, Boston threw in Brooklyn's first round pick in next year's draft.
Instead of lighting fire to the jersey as many in Cleveland did when James left the team in 2010 for the Miami Heat, Hartman dropped a hand-written note on top of the jersey. The potential value of that pick is so obvious that it need not be said out loud. "They can now rebuild when LeBron is gone". Celtics play-by-play announcer Mike Gorman chimed in, saying Boston is a better team after getting Irving.
