As part of their investigation, Mueller's team is delving into the finances of Trump associates, including former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, son-in-law Jared Kushner and former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who has deep financial ties to Russian Federation and Ukraine.
Manafort has primarily been represented by Reginald Brown of WilmerHale - the same DC law firm that employed Mueller until he was appointed special counsel in May to investigate allegations that Trump colluded with Russian Federation to win the election.
Mueller, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation director who practiced with WilmerHale before starting the special counsel position, has been examining Manafort's personal finances and consulting work, Politico reports.
He replied within minutes: "If it's what you say I love it especially later in the summer".
Michael Zeldin, a former federal prosecutor, served as special counsel to Mueller when he was Assistant Attorney General in the DOJ's Criminal Division.
But the statements on Mueller stood in contrast to what Trump has privately told at least one person close to him in recent months. "I'm very proud of what we've done at the border", Mr Trump said, likely referring to Mr Sessions' crackdown on illegal immigration.
A Mueller spokesperson declined comment for this story.

Manafort has emerged as a central figure in several USA investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign. At the unveiling of Trump's new golf club in Charlotte in 2014, Dodson asked Eric where his company's financing was coming from since so many USA banks and investors were avoiding golf course projects after the Great Recession.
Manafort has been a subject of a longstanding FBI investigation into his foreign dealings.
"We don't engage in fishing expeditions", Rosenstein told Fox Sunday, using a phrase for an investigation that doesn't stick to a stated objective but hopes to uncover incriminating information. The probe could give Mueller leverage on Manafort and make him a more cooperative witness in the overall investigation into the Trump campaign. Confirming that the raid took place, Manafort spokesman Jason Maloni said that the former campaign chairman had "consistently cooperated with law enforcement". 'Russia had nothing to do with me winning, ' he said. Manafort, a longtime Republican operative, had advised the party and its former leader Viktor Yanukovych for almost a decade.
