French police shot and arrested a suspect in a dramatic motorway chase Wednesday after a auto smashed into soldiers outside a barracks in a Paris suburb, injuring six.

On Wednesday morning, an unknown perpetrator drove a BMW auto into a group of military servicemen taking part in the Sentinel patrol operation in the Paris suburb of Levallois-Perret.

It said: "Due to ongoing threats to France by Islamist terrorist groups, and recent French military intervention against Daesh (formerly referred to as ISIL), the French government has warned the public to be especially vigilant and has reinforced its security measures".

The attacker was waiting in the dark-coloured auto in an alleyway before he drove at speed at the troops as they left their barracks to go on patrol at around 8am local time.

Levallois Mayor Patrick Balkany denounced on BFM television what he called an "odious attack" and said it was "without a doubt deliberate".

"A suspect who was driving in the vehicle involved in the attack has been arrested on the highway between Paris and Boulogne-sur-Mer", Philippe told lawmakers during a parliamentary session.

The Research and Intervention Brigades (BRI) of Lille and Rouen intervened on the section of the motorway between Boulogne-sur-Mer and Calais, according to a source close to the investigation.

They were part of the 7,000-strong anti-terrorism Sentinelle force set up in January 2015 which sees armed, uniformed soldiers patrol the streets and guard high-risk areas such as tourist sites and religious buildings.

Police forces have been deployed to search for the auto and driver, who is on the run, it said.
