While Denver would have loved to keep Ward's talent on the roster longterm, the team already has over $30 million in salary tied in the secondary for 2018 which would have made it very hard to sign the 30-year old up past this season.
There's a strong Bucs tie to Ward in John Spytek, the team's director of player personnel and Jason Licht's right-hand man. Spytek was Cleveland's director of college scouting when the Browns drafted Ward in the second round out of OR in 2010, and he spent two years as a scout with the Broncos when Ward played in Denver, including their Super Bowl championship season in 2015.
Ward returned to practice Monday and Tuesday and word quickly got out that he was on the trading block or the chopping block this weekend when teams trim their rosters to 53 with their season openers approaching. In his three seasons with the Broncos, the 30-year-old Ward started 41 games. "Huge part of our success as a defense".
"Going to miss my Dawg!" linebacker Brandon Marshall wrote on Instragram. "I hope it's fake news, you know? Somebody will get a STEAL!"
"I thought it was fake news", Miller said Wednesday, according to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio.
COWBOYS: Dallas released quarterback Kellen Moore, completing undrafted rookie Cooper Rush's surprising rise to the backup job behind Dak Prescott. He brings that veteran presence and can be a game changer on any defense.
Not only do the Broncos gain additional salary cap space, they move on from a player that has missed five of the last six games because of injury. Colt McCoy will be staying with the Redskins to back up Kirk Cousins because Nate Sudfeld was cut. McDonald reportedly agreed to a $24 million, four-year extension with the Dolphins. The Browns sent a sixth-round pick in the 2018 draft to the Steelers, and they will also receive a 2019 seventh-round choice from Pittsburgh. The 49ers also placed receiver Aaron Burbridge (Michigan State) on season-ending injured reserve.
Plenty of teams will be trying their best to pick Ward up as soon as possible, especially with the regular season just a week away, and he'll be one of the big names to follow once the cuts for the 53-man rosters are complete and loads of talented free agents out there are evaluated.
