In metro Atlanta, Butts County, Griffin-Spalding County, Lamar County and Pike County Schools will be closed Monday and Tuesday.
Heavy rains, high winds and the strong possibility of tornados associated with Hurricane Irma are predicted for our area.
That announcement came on the district's social media channels.
"Today, I am directing the closure of all public schools, state colleges, state universities and state offices for their normal activities effective Friday through Monday, to ensure we have every space available for sheltering and staging", Gov. Scott said.
In coastal Georgia, Bryan County, Savannah-Chatham County, McIntosh County, Monroe County and Glynn County Schools closed Friday, and will remain closed Monday and Tuesday.
According to a Facebook post, Horry County Schools will be open on Friday, Sept. 8.
All school and district events that were scheduled for Monday are canceled.
University of Florida in Gainesville said it's expecting to know more later on Tuesday, but has not yet gotten back to News4Jax with details.
Florida State University in Tallahassee said it's monitoring the storm and preparing for a possible impact as staff spent Tuesday assessing facilities, testing equipment and stocking up on supplies. FSU had tried to move up the game to Saturday at noon in advance of the storm.
"This is based on current tracking information from the National Hurricane Center and the Governor's Office", Hall said.
