All the employees at the embassy got together to celebrate Kerala's most important festival.
"Onam", the annual Hindu festival celebrated by Malayalis the world across including Kerala where nature is worshipped, is being celebrated this year between August 25 and September 6. He said that, this year, they had made a decision to visit Mysuru where they will be visiting Zoo, Mysore Palace today and KRS, Ranganathittu and other tourist spots tomorrow before heading back to Kerala.
Onam is an auspicious festival for the people of Kerela and is highly celebrated by Malayalis. This is the day when pious asura King Mahabali is believed to visit his people, according to a popular legend. The festival commences on the day known as Atham and culminates on the 10th day, known as Thiru Onam or Thiruvonam, meaning "Sacred Onam Day". The aroma of a variety of traditional delicacies served in the sadya (feast), along with colourful flower rangolis were an integral part of the celebrations in Malayali homes.
Despite being a demon, Mahabali was known to be generous and kind, and his reign is regarded as the golden era in Kerala, which is why his "return" is so widely celebrated.
The festival serves as a celebration of Kerala's heritage, with the state's culture coming to the fore in spectacular fashion. In the picture, people have painted their bodies like lions before they can take part in the Onam festival. He also requested on behalf of all Keralites in Bhopal that a government holiday should be declared on Onam.
