The other driver, a corrections officer on his way to work in a private vehicle, was also killed, Lanier said.
A Hardee County (FL) sheriff's deputy was one of two people killed in a vehicle accident Sunday morning as Hurricane Irma began to encroach upon the state. Bridges had just left a hurricane shelter where she had been working to get more supplies when the collision occurred, Tampa station WFLA reported.
Hardee County Sheriff Arnold Lanier said Julie Bridges was a 13-year veteran of his office. She was planning on returning to work another shift this morning when she was killed.
"We are heartbroken by this loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and fellow officers at this time", Jones said in a statement.

The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed the crash took place Sunday morning in Hardee County, located east of Sarasota.
