The International Olympic Committee awarded the 2024 summer Olympic Games to Paris and the 2028 edition to Los Angeles following a vote in Lima, Peru on Thursday morning (NZ Time).
Thanks largely to opposition or lack of political support, eight cities have pulled out of the bidding process for the 2022 and 2024 Games.
"Everyone connected with LA 2028 is thrilled to be part of this win-win-win scenario for the Olympic movement", bid leader Casey Wasserman said in a statement.
Following the IOC's vote in July, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo celebrated the decision.
"I want to thank the people of my city, the Angelenos who have believed in the Olympics for over a century", Garcetti said then. Scott Blackmun, the CEO of the U.S. Olympic Committee, called it an incredibly special day for Paris and L.A. Former U.S. Olympic sprinter Allyson Felix said nothing brings humanity together more than the Olympic Games.
This is the first time the Olympics are being held back in the United State since the Games were hosted in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1996. "The notion that "L.A.is going to have the Olympics, one way or another" isn't necessarily true, as many opportunities still exist to intervene and stop them entirely".
The London 2012 Games raised about $1.1 billion, while Rio de Janeiro in 2016 had claimed it had slightly surpassed London, but final accounts are sketchy given the current investigations for corruption linked to Olympic Games projects in Brazil.
"The IOC Ethics Commission is following up on this matter", the committee announced in a statement this week.
In July, the International Olympic Committee membership unanimously voted to try to reach an agreement with the two cities. One read "Paris 2024, ' and the other "Los Angeles 2028". Some on-stage delegates, including Wassermen, wore sneakers with their suits and ties. "I can assure you that LA 2028 is ready".
"In the coming seven years we will prepare the Olympic Games with all our energy", French President Emmanuel Macron, who had personally campaigned for the bid, said.
Wednesday's confirmation came against the backdrop of a possible worldwide corruption scheme surrounding Brazil's 2016 Olympic bid.
It was two years ago that L.A.'s effort appeared to be over after the city lost to Boston in a competition to become the sole American bidder.
There were no other candidates for either the 2024 or 2028 Games and the votes were a formality. L.A. loves the Olympics because the Games have lifted up our city twice before.
