Seven bullets were fired at Gauri Lankesh by unindentified miscreants and she was hit in the forehead and chest regions, say TV reports.
According to The Hindu, Lankesh was shot three times by unidentified men at close range at around 8 pm at the entrance of her house in Rajarajeshwari Nagar.
Police said that Gauri was getting out of her vehicle to open the gate of her house, when the assailants shot her.
Gauri Lankesh was the editor of weekly tabloid magazine Lankesh Patrike, columnist in newspapers and familiar face on TV channels. She was attacked outside her residence. It is alleged that the shooters were waiting for her outside her in Rajajeswari Nagar.
The daughter of writer, translator and journalist P Lankesh, she was a columnist in both Kannada and English, and a vocal critic of the right wing.
Bengaluru Police Commissioner has confirmed the incident and police officers are rushing to the spot.

In November, Lankesh was convicted by a court of defaming two BJP leaders for articles published in her periodical in 2008.
Talking to TV channel Suvarna news, Ramalinga Reddy, the new Home Minister of Karnataka, said that the reason for the barbarous act of killing Gauri Lankesh.
The News Minute, quoting police, reports that Gauri got out of her auto to open the gate of her house, when assailants shot her.
Recalling his association with Gauri from her early days as a journalist he said that she was also actively involved in reforming Naxalites.
