While Anderson vs Carreno Busta doesn't have the star appeal of the other semi-final, it still promises to be an intriguing contest as both men are tantalisingly close to a career-defining Grand Slam final.
It was Carreno Busta who settled into the final quicker, breaking the huge Anderson serve in game seven on his way to the first set. It looked like it would continue when he won the first set 6-4, making only one unforced error in the set to Anderson's 12.
The dividend has been a year which has seen him make three Grand Slam finals, the fourth round at Wimbledon being the only let-down.
Cliff Drysdale was the last South African man in the USA final in 1965 but he was defeated by Manuel Santana.
It will pit Anderson against either Rafael Nadal or Juan Martin del Potro, who were to play the second semifinal at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The South African who played college tennis for IL, broke serve in the fourth game to lead 3-1, but the lead was short-lived when Carreno Busta broke back.
The 6ft 8in Anderson needed some inspiration and he found it with a backhand cross-court victor that brought him level at one set all.
There was a tense final game to negotiate but a Carreno Busta forehand hit the net, sending Anderson up into the stands on a victory lap.
Anderson then to served his way in the fourth set make his way into the final.
It was a string of six straight service holds which followed before Carreno Busta served to stay in the set at 5-6 down. "I think just my emotions at the end summed it up".
"Rafa just play even better the last three sets of the match, and I couldn't hit my backhand as good as I did in the beginning of the match", said Del Potro. "I assume we know what we're going to get from him".
"I don't know if the team hug was appropriate after the semi-finals, but it felt like the right thing to do", he said. He didn't drop a set through his first five matches.
Anderson finished with a power-packed 22 aces and 58 winners.
But Carreno Busta insists it is about time he enjoyed a slice of Grand Slam luck - when he made his Slam debut at Roland Garros in 2013, he was drawn against Federer. That said, fatigue could be a factor for Anderson after his last match against Querrey.
"It will be an interesting match, and I'm very excited to go out there and compete in the semifinals".
While Nadal is the heavy favourite given his career record, enormous experience, and surprising resurgence this year, the US Open title is still very much up for grabs. Del Potro was the U.S. Open champion in 2009, when he beat Nadal in the semifinals and Roger Federer in the final.
"A lot of the matches he played this tournament have been a tough one".
A former player at the University of Illinois, Anderson took that chance.
