We saw history repeat itself with the Moto X (2014) when it was updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop ahead of the Nexus 5.
Earlier today, we reported that Moto had started pushing out the Android Nougat update to the Moto X Play. Due to openness of the Android Ecosystem and vast usability, it remain quite hard for different OEMs to update every device to latest firmware.
However, if you were wondering about the Android Oreo update then, unfortunately, the Moto X Style/Pure Edition has completed its 2-year update cycle and will stay on Nougat as its last major OS release.
XDASNR has stated that this update can only be flashed on Moto X Play Indian variant with build MPDS24.107-70-1-5/5 (Download link). The company hasn't made any formal announcement about this software rollout yet, but many Moto X Pure Edition owners in the U.S. are now reporting that they have received this update on their device. Later, the smartphone owners have left the hope of getting the OTA update.

Now you got its successor that's the Moto X4 which is going to be Google's first Android One device. Now, the Moto X Pure has started receiving the update after a long testing period.
While the reason for a delayed update for Moto X Play handset is still not known. But the details are fuzzy when it comes to carriers and how users are receiving the updates. Lenovo replied on the same that the update for the phone has been scheduled and just wait for some more time.
Motorola released the Nougat update for an iteration of this handset back in July.
I know you've been waiting for this update very patiently, so I won't keep you.
