The president of Las Vegas's police union sent a letter to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Thursday asking the league to "conduct an investigation, and take appropriate action, into Michael Bennett's obvious false allegations against our officers".
On September 6, 2017 the LVMPD was made aware of a statement put on social media that contained allegations of police misconduct towards National Football League player Michael Bennett, who was in Las Vegas over the weekend of August 26, 2017.
Bennett, in a open letter posted to Twitter on Wednesday, said that he was the victim of police brutality, racial profiling, and excessive force after gunshots rang out in a Las Vegas neighborhood after the August 26 Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight, which he attended.
In a statement, Bennett said Wednesday he is considering filing a federal civil-rights lawsuit and has asked for the LVMPD to release any body camera footage of the incident.
Bennett, who recalled the scene in a Twitter post, accused Las Vegas police of singling him out and pointing their guns at him for "nothing more than simply being a black man in the wrong place at the wrong time".
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is opening up about the recent events involving teammate Michael Bennett, after the Seahawks defensive end was involved in an encounter with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department last month.
"I can tell you as I stand here today, I see no evidence of that", McMahill said. "I see no evidence that race played any role in this incident".
LVMPD have launched an internal investigation into the incident, which includes reviewing "at least" 126 videos associated with cameras, including body cam footage. "No, I don't believe that", Bennett said.
Michael Bennett said he's trying to focus on the Seahawks season opener Sunday against his brother's Packers. "As out uniformed officers entered the casino, they observed Bennett hiding behind a slot machine".
"Due to Bennett's actions, and the information the officers had at the time, they believed that Bennett may have been involved in the shooting and they gave chase", McMahill told reporters.
"I have known Lieutenant Abbott for years and perceive him as honorable, but he's made a mistake".
The reasons why police officers pointed out Bennett for running from the gun shots, among all the patrons who were running out of the building, remains to be seen.
"We think there was an unlawful detention and the use of excessive force, with a gun put to his head", Burris told the Associated Press. All those situations you see, a lot of things are happening in our country right now, you know it's heartbreaking.
Added Kaepernick in a tweet: "This violation that happened against my Brother Michael Bennett is disgusting and unjust".
"I'm very proud of Michael and the way that he handled it", Martellus said. "I can only imagine what Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, and Charleena Lyles felt", he writes.
"That's part of what we have to investigate", McMahill said.
