Spurs prepared for their opening Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday with manager Mauricio Pochettino saying the team must start treating Wembley like home.

Pochettino said three of the teams in Tottenham's group, which also includes Cypriot champions Apoel Nicosia, could end up playing for second place behind holders Real Madrid.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has reiterated that the recent struggles of English sides in Europe is down to a lack of winter break. "If we can get through the group then there's no reason why we can't go quite far in the competition". "Dortmund are a great team".

Real Madrid have dominated the Champions League in recent years, winning three of the last four competitions, with their Spanish rivals Barcelona and Germany's Bayern Munich the only other winners since Chelsea's triumph.

Pochettino hopes Tottenham's players can block out all talk of a Wembley curse and show they have learnt from last year's harsh Champions League lessons.

"The first game is always important", he told a pre-match news conference.

"When you are here (in England), the Premier League is the main competition for every player. It was a very painful experience because we couldn't be at the level we needed to be, but now that's not an excuse".

Tottenham, who host Dortmund at Wembley on Wednesday, faced the German side in the Europa League two seasons ago and were beaten 5-1 on aggregate in the last 16. "But fortunately we have a fantastic squad and I'm sure whoever comes in will be ready to compete on the big stage", Kane said.

"We've got to make sure we win our home games because going away in the Champions League is always going to be hard, no matter who you play". It would be good if we could score there and, in an ideal-case scenario, get some points on the board. But despite the intimidating opposition, Pochettino wants his side to make a fast start to the campaign.
