Trump immediately expressed his staunch support for Saudi Arabia after the Arab states announced sanctions against Qatar, but some other USA officials including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson later adopted a more measured tone.
Stressing Moscow's support for the Kuwaiti mediation, Lavrov voiced Russia's keenness on a unified and strong Gulf Cooperation Council, noting that there is no need for new problems in the region.
Lavrov, who also met the Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani Wednesday, said his trip was aimed at enhancing the economic and political ties between the two countries.
US President Donald Trump has called for a diplomatic solution for the crisis between Qatar and its neighbouring countries.
In a phone conversation on Wednesday, Trump told the Saudi monarch that a diplomatic resolution was necessary in order to fulfill a commitment Washington and its regional allies had made to stay united while fighting terror, the White House said in statement.
The Saudi move on June 5 was taken along with the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt to protest against what they say is Qatar's support of groups and individuals linked to extremism and terrorism. "The two leaders also addressed the threat that Iran poses to the region", it said.
Other countries including Libya, Yemen and the Maldives have followed suit.
Doha denies the claims and accuses the other countries of an attack on its sovereignty.
