Portis and Mirotic exchanged choice words before a brief shoving match ensued.
Portis was suspended eight games by the team, per K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune. Most likely, surgery will be required to fix the damage, and Mirotic will be out indefinetely.
The suspension came after Portis and Mirotic got into it during a practice on Tuesday and ended with Portis laying out Mirotic with a single punch that broke multiple bones in Mirotic's face and gave him a concussion. Paxson said Mirotic needs to clear the concussion protocol before the facial injuries can be addressed.
Both parties were aggressive leading up to the conflict, according to Bulls vice president John Paxson, but Portis threw the punch that ultimately landed him with his suspension. "He's a good kid, but he made a mistake". Mirotic dropped to the floor and lay there for several minutes before getting up.
Portis, also a forward, averaged 6.8 points last season for Chicago. His first three seasons in Chicago haven't exactly been sparkling - he has averaged a modest 10.8 points and 5.3 rebounds with a discreet 35% success rate in three pointers. He signed a two-year deal with $12.5 million guaranteed this season to stay in Chicago.
Both players will not travel with the team to Toronto for the regular season opener on Thursday night, which means the start at power forward will go to rookie Lauri Markkanen.
