After listening to evidence for a week, a New York grand jury has charged two officers in the New York Police Department with the first-degree rape of an 18-year old woman.
According to sources, the narcotics officers will turn themselves in next week for arraignment in Brooklyn Supreme Court.
The attack allegedly occurred on September 15 of this year after she was arrested for possession of marijuana and an anti-anxiety medication.
"The problem is, which is it?"
Following the publication of this letter, Bederow declined to comment to BuzzFeed News "on anyone's characterization based on the Post article", but "caution [ed] people not to assume the accuracy of what happened simply upon unchallenged accusations". "Pick one, you can't have both".
Hours before and a door away from the trial of another officer charged with murdering an unarmed man, the two were escorted into a ceremonial courtroom in handcuffs, set free after they made bail.
Detective Martins allegedly told the young woman he and his partner are "freaks" and asked her what she wanted to do to get out of the arrest. If convicted, they each could face up to 25 years in prison.
As the detectives - both in plainclothes - approached the auto, one of them shined his flashlight through the window and saw the young woman adjusting her bra.
Martins then forced the handcuffed victim to perform oral sex and raped her in the backseat of the van while Hall drove and watched through the rear-view mirror, prosecutors said.
"It is incomprehensible that two veteran N.Y.P.D. detectives would allegedly commit such an outrageous act", he said. Martins then allegedly raped the teen. Hall is being held on $150,000 bail and Martins on $250,000 bail. "They took an oath to protect and serve, but allegedly violated that oath by raping a young woman who was in their custody", acting Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said. Hall then forced the teen to perform a sex act, the prosecutor said.
Both NYPD officers reportedly told colleagues there was no rape and that the sex with the teenager was consensual.
"They are trying to blame the victim here, which is really disgusting", David says, adding that the teen has been attacked for the clothes she is wearing in social media posts.
"This validates what my client has always said - that she was kidnapped, handcuffed, brutally raped and then thrown onto the street by two on-duty officers", the victim's attorney told the Post. Both officers were ordered to return to court on January 18, 2018.
