It takes the company's clean energy projects to 18 across the U.S., with the firm now generating enough clean electricity to power 330,000 homes every year.
However, in his latest tweet, Bezos posted a video of himself on top of a wind turbine in Amazon Wind Farm Texas, Amazon's largest wind farm till date, doing something different. Working with Amazon, the newest wind farm will be operated by Lincoln Clean Energy.
Amazon said it has launched 18 wind and solar projects across the U.S., with more than 35 still to come online to help meet the goal of powering its global resources with 100% renewable energy.
According to Mashable, Amazon aims to provide clean energy power to over 3 lakh homes every year through the combined energy of its 50 renewable solar and wind projects in Ohio, Carolina, and Virginia.
Indeed, it is just one of more almost 20 wind and solar farms to have been commissioned by Amazon around the USA, as the company - like Apple, Google, Facebook and so many other tech giants - works to meet 100 per cent of its energy needs with renewables.
"Investing in renewable energy is a win-win-win-win - it's right for our customers, our communities, our business and our planet", Amazon's Worldwide Director of Sustainability Kara Hurst said in a statement. The project was developed by Lincoln Clean Energy, which is an I Squared Capital portfolio company. Though most petroleum is used for transportation and to heat homes, a small but significant percentage continues to fuel plants that generate electricity. It will deliver more than 1 million megawatt-hours of clean energy to the grid annually, Amazon said in a statement Thursday. In this case, though, the electricity is aimed at offsetting the energy demands of the warehouse-sized data centers that power Amazon's cloud-computing unit.
These announcements represent something of a positive arms race, as Amazon, Walmart, Target and others signal ever-rising goals for water and energy efficiencies and lower emissions targets in their operations. So far, the company has committed to purchase more than 2.5 GW of renewable energy projects.
