Lokesh Rahul was left out along with pacers Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav. Among notables who missed out were the top spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja and the struggling right-hander KL Rahul who has failed to make a point in the Sri Lanka series and thereafter has had to sacrifice his spot for Manish Pandey to capitalise.
Like Ashwin and Jadeja, Umesh and Shami too won't feature in the ODI series against New Zealand. He had a prolific season in the Duleep Trophy where he scored two centuries from three matches.
The three-match ODI series will begin in Mumbai on October 22 while Pune (October 25) and Kanpur (October 29) will host the second and third match respectively. "There are so many quality players within the Indian squad and they have been playing so much cricket lately that it's only natural that certain players are rested certain times". Because, as of now, this is the best combination. "We are trying to rotate everybody. DK instead of Rahul in the middle order is also a part of the process", he added.
Talking about team selection, official concludes, "When somebody comes into the team, if he comes with a lot of runs, he will come with better confidence and will have a better chance of doing well".
