The form factor was popular enough for Roku to warrant an update last year and throughout the years has been copied by main hardware manufacturers and cheap knock-offs alike. Apple surprised many when it announced that it would support both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, two new technologies that promise better visuals and better audio, respectively - neither of which will be offered on the Roku Streaming Stick+.
All five new players go on sale on October 6th. It also lowered the price of its most powerful, feature-packed streaming media player, the Roku Ultra, which can stream HD, 4K, and 4K HDR at up to 60 fps.
Roku on Monday unveiled an updated lineup of video-streaming gadgets.
The Roku Express and Roku Express+ have been updated with new processors that are 5 times more powerful than their predecessors. The Roku Search will also extend to OTA channels as well as streaming services providing a comprehensive search base for cord-cutters. In other words, the Roku stick is competitively priced while offering access to Roku's genuinely excellent Roku TV smart platform and its famously awesome selection of streaming entertainment options (more than 500,000 different content offerings across some 5000 "channels", as Roku calls its platforms apps). TechRadar even asked Roku whether they would see the light of day outside the USA, but the company wouldn't confirm anything either way. The company also slashes $30 off the price of its top-of-the-range Roku Ultra box. The benefit here is a faster and more stable streaming experience which translates to faster load times and less time buffering.
The $99.99 Roku Ultra, a standalone device that connects to your TV with an HDMI cable, also looks competitive compared to the $179 Apple TV 4K. The HDR is a feature that the new device shares with all of Roku's other 4K set-top boxes but this is the first time it has ever appeared in anything so small from the company. However, they now come with a remote control that has a microphone for voice search.
Those tricks, mostly, involve enhancements coming to Roku's voice recognition software. In addition, Roku is also introducing the new Roku Streaming Stick+ ($70) with an advanced wireless range, along with HD, 4K, and up to 60 FPS 4K HDR playback. Roku says the update will hit all devices by the end of the year. The Roku Ultra is going to sell for $100, starting on October 8.
