A forecast low of 17 degrees by nightfall would eclipse the record of 18 degrees set in 1973, Root said, and temperatures are expected to be even colder outside the city, possibly reaching the single digits in parts of northern Berks County.
That's today's expected high temperature.
"It's a cold snap, but it gets more seasonal past Saturday night, and next week should be closer to normal", said Brian Lasorsa, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service.
The early wintry blast is the result of a deep pool of frigid polar air being the Arctic front that crossed through the region late Thursday.
Also expected are scattered snow showers and narrow bands of lake-effect snow southeast of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario into this morning, weather service forecasters said.
The previous record low for November 11 was set at 24 degrees in 1901. The record of zero degrees in 1936 remains intact.
Temperatures are expected to warm up to the low-50s by Monday, still remaining below average, he said. The glacial temperatures Saturday morning are set to shatter a Central Park record set 84 years ago.
The average low temperatures this time of the year is 36°. There is a slight chance of showers between midnight and 4 a.m. on Wednesday, although less than one-tenth of an inch of rain is expected to fall.
