LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech Athletics registered its highest Graduation Success Rate in school history during the 2016-17 academic year according to data released Wednesday by the NCAA. The latest graduation success rate marked the ninth-consecutive rate of more than 70 percent by Razorback student-athletes and marks the first time the GSR has risen to 80 percent.
The GSR formula removes from the rate student-athletes who leave school while academically eligible and includes student-athletes who transfer to a school after initially enrolling elsewhere. Men's basketball federal rate was a 42-point improvement over the federal rate of 33 while women's basketball improved on the federal rate of 47 by 43 points.
"We stress to our student-athletes that coming to GW isn't a four-year decision to compete but a lifetime decision to obtain an education and degree that will benefit them for the rest of their lives as leaders in our society", said Director of Athletics and Recreation Patrick Nero.
The Rutgers football program has earned a GSR score of 81 percent-or-better in each of the past nine years. Women's tennis posted a flawless GSR score for the third consecutive year and for the fifth time in program history.
Wrestling had the greatest year-to-year GSR increase of all Penn State teams with a jump of 16 percentage points.
"This is another strong showing from Ohio State's student-athletes", John Davidson, Ohio State Faculty Athletic Representative and Professor in Germanic Languages and Literatures, said. Football (82), men's track and field (89), men's golf (100), women's golf (100), soccer (100) and women's tennis (100) boasted the top scores in the Big 12 in their respective sports. GSR rates that were equal to or higher than the national average for each sport were also made by the same eight programs.
Here are the annual scores for United Kingdom student-athletes breaking or tying the school record each year of the 13-year history of the GSR.
The NCAA also released federal graduation rates of all students. "Our student-athletes are accomplishing great things in the classroom, which is reflective of a learning environment created through the hard work of the student-athletes, and, as well, by our coaches and an athletics support staff that is thoroughly committed to their success". Athletes who transfer in good standing do not count against the school's GSR.
