But Lovren has now brought to light just how serious some of the comments sent to him on social media have been, with the Croatia global posting a screenshot on his Instagram story of someone threatening violence against his family.
"The Liverpool defender captioned a message sent to him, which read 'I'm gonna murder ur family u Croatian prick", "horrible what kind of people we have".
Even the mere mention of 28-year-old Lovren's defending is enough to make the blood run cold in most of us.
Merseyside Police told CNN that Lovren has yet to officially report the abusive message he'd received, while Instagram was not immediately available for comment.
He said, as quoted by the BBC: "I can not ignore when my family is threatened".
Lovren was named in Liverpool's starting line-up in the 3-0 win over Huddersfield on Saturday but sustained an injury in the warm-up and was replaced by Ragnar Klavan.
Before the match, Klopp compared the media reaction to Lovren's performance to people "watching an accident".
'I just can't and won't accept that.
His manager Jurgen Klopp turned voice of reason in the aftermath of the game and leapt to his defense. I'm not this kind of person.
"Of course it's not the nicest week in Dejan's life but it's only football", said Klopp. People don't become a better or a worse person through making a mistake in a football game.
