Netflix's announcement of the new chapter confirmed series stars Ashley Walters and Kane Robinson are reprising their roles.
The Canadian rapper liked the drama so much he bought the production rights to the show.
He's already the executive producer of The Carter Effect, a documentary focused on NBA All-Star Vince Carter.
Netflix is continuing its tradition of extending popular Channel 4 TV shows after confirming that London street drama Top Boy is being revived. According to The Hollywood Reporter cover story featuring the Toronto superstar, Drake got the original creative team - Charles Steel and Alasdair Flind, Ronan Bennett and Yann Demange - who will executive produce the series. Drake will exec produce alongside his business partner, Adel "Future" Nur, with Maverick Carter and Jamal Henderson for LeBron James' SpringHill Entertainment banner. The show won a BAFTA for in 2012, but was dropped a year later.
A press release from Netflix offers a brief synopsis of the new season which "picks up as Dushane (Walters) returns from exile to his home in London to reclaim his throne in the highly lucrative drug market".
Now a third season will premiere as an Netflix original series, thanks to Drake and National Basketball Association star LeBron James, who's producing it via his Spring Hill Entertainment production company.
"My taste in television or movies is always kind of similar to my approach to music, which is, I like when people really hit the nail on the head with real human emotions", he said. Awaiting them both is Jamie, the young, hungry and ruthless gang leader whose ambitions leave no place for Dushane and Sully. Netflix have noted how Drake's passion for the show "drove its resurrection".
