Paul Merson believes that Jack Wilshere is deserving of a place in the England squad, but admits that he will likely have to leave Arsenal to kickstart his career.

Hodgson worked with Wilshere whilst he was in charge of England, prompting newspapers to suggest he is keen to link-up with the 25-year-old again.

Southgate's biggest problem as he prepares for next summer's World Cup is the centre of his midfield and Hodgson would do him a major favour by taking Wilshere to Selhurst Park and playing him regularly.

"Jack played as a number 10 all of last season on loan at Bournemouth", Southgate said.

"We bought [Mesut] Ozil and these players".

Wilshere is back to full fitness at Arsenal for the first time in a long time. But we are not playing with a 10 tomorrow [against Germany on Friday].

"We need him both internationally and for the Arsenal", the former captain added. I think he is a talent and I really respect him as an individual.

"I'd like [Wilshere] to play even more, to be in the starting XI more often and get back into that England team", Adams told the London Evening Standard at this week's premiere for the documentary film "89", which tells the dramatic story of that year's title win.

"I think he is a deeper player but he is not playing deeper".

"You'd have to ask Arsene why he wasn't at Arsenal last year and you'd have to ask Eddie why he played him as a 10 last year".

"I work with [sporting director] Dougie Freedman and we talk about potential players and Jack Wilshere's name has never been mentioned".

"He needs to get on the ball and play football and be in a team that really are going to have a lot more of the ball than not".

"At the moment I'm concentrating on getting into the Premier League team".
