After almost two days of deliberation, a jury has found Nicki Minaj's brother, Jelani Maraj, guilty in his child rape trial.
The trial lasted over a month, and saw the defence claim that the allegations were fabricated in an attempt to extort $25 million (£19 million) from his famous rapper sister. He will be held without bail in Nassau County Correctional Center in East Meadow, New York.
Maraj was first arrested in connection with the case in December 2015.
According to the reports, prosecutors said that DNA evidence supported the allegations after Maraj's semen was found on the child's pyjamas. He was handcuffed and taken into custody following the verdict and now potentially faces 25 years to life in prison. His lawyer has said he will appeal the judgment. The girl's younger brother also testified that he witnessed one assault.
His attorney, David Schwartz, did not immediately return a message from PEOPLE. She testified in detail about how Maraj would allegedly commit sexual acts up to four times a week and sometimes twice daily.
Jurors delivered their verdict on Thursday (November 9) in Nassau County Court.
"We hope that today's verdict will help the family in the healing process and that it will close this awful chapter in their lives", District Attorney Madeline Singas said following the guilty verdict. The charges stem from an incident in which Maraj assaulted the 11-year-old child of his now ex-wife, threatening her younger brother (8-years-old at the time) with violence should he speak up.
Maraj's ex-wife and the mother the victim testified that her daughter oddly became "distant", but made no objections when she married Maraj in August 2015. She claimed he would also slap her in the face if she refused his advances. He said they were both partially unclothed. Maraj, the boy said, told him to stay silent or he would be taken from his mother, says Brosh.
