The Nittany Lions are 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the Big Ten going into the game.
McSorley became Penn State's all-time touchdown leader with 68, overtaking Daryll Clark's record of 65 with one rushing and two passing scores, and the Nittany Lions scored 35 unanswered points after going down 6-0 in the first quarter.
What could have been wasteful drives for Penn State were revived by wide passes downfield or first-down rushes from Trace McSorley. RB Saquon Barkley remains a Heisman contender even with Penn State losing two in a row.
"I think we're always at our best on offense when Trace factors into our running game", coach James Franklin said.
He finished the day with 14 carries for 35 yards.
But as Franklin alluded to, Saturday kind of felt like the Nittany Lions' win over Rutgers at HighPoint Solutions Stadium in 2016.
It has been said time and time again this season, but it bears repeating: this is not the same Rutgers football team from a year ago. The second field goal for the Knights was the product of a 15-yard, 57-yard drive - the most plays on a scoring drive all season for Rutgers - indicative of the team's offensive play for much of the first half. Quarterback Gio Rescigno completed only seven of 20 passes for 43 yards. Edwards also ran five times for 32 yards in the march.
Ryan Bates, who was hurt October 28 against Ohio State, missed his second game with an undisclosed injury. They were outgained 304-200 in the game, managing just 79 yards in the second half. And this quote could've been said after either game.
Following back-to-back losses at Ohio State and Michigan State, Penn State football fans were anxious to get the Nittany Lions back in Beaver Stadium. Franklin didn't elaborate and didn't answer a reporter's question, walking out of the media room when asked whether Bowen would return.
Linebackers Jason Cabinda and Brandon Smith were all over the field as the duo combined for 21 tackles. He was hurt trying to cover a kick and was unable to put weight on his leg as he was helped off. Rutgers' two wins came in 1918 and 1988.
Rutgers can't throw the ball. However, moments later Barkley found the end zone from a yard out to extend the Penn State lead to 21-6.
Penn State made its most inert start of the season, failing to field the opening kickoff, missing tackles and not scoring in the first quarter for the first time all year.
