Addressing a gathering in Kolkata, Akhilesh Yadav said, "BJP's winning percentage is 46% wherever polls were conducted via EVMs and 15% when it was done via ballot papers". Indicating EVM tampering in the Uttar Pradesh Civic Elections 2017, the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh claimed that the "faulty EVMs" are responsible for his party's debacle in civic polls in UP and mentioned that similar thing had happened during Assembly polls.
The social media was quick to question why the BJP swept EVM-based polls but lost in four other local elections held with ballot papers. Whereas in Nagar Palika BJP secured 916 posts against 4295 by others and in Nagar Panchayat polls it won won- 663 seats in comparison to 4715 won by other parties and independents.
"If the BJP is honest and believes in democracy then they should discard the EVMs and conduct voting on ballot papers".
Vaibhav Maheshwari, the party's state spokesman said the BJP should definitely be anxious as the urban body polls have not been "exactly in their favour", as the party was claiming. Incidentally, Akhilesh Yadav-led SP failed to win a single mayoral seat.
Of the total 11,994 BJP candidates for elections to municipal wards in the three-tier civic polls, 9,812 lost, he said.
Samajwadi Party (SP) spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary alleged that the BJP again misused EVMs to win 14 mayoral contests and reiterated the demand that ballot paper be used in the future elections. "Otherwise, more of our candidates would had become mayors in the state.and we would have won more seats", she said.
"Bahujan Samaj Party, Samajwadi Party and Congress are indulging in misinformation campaign following their crushing defeat in ULB elections. But, it lost most of the seats where election was held using ballot paper". "The civic elections results clearly show that both SP and Congress have lost their janadhaar, while BSP is on revival course". Mr Singh said in a statement.
BJP's UP general secretary Vijay Pathak however launched a counter attack on the opposition saying instead of introspecting after the results, these parties were blaming EVMs for their poor performance. Their allegations are baseless.
