Residents and veterans gathered at a war memorial park in Boynton Beach on Thursday to mark 76 years since the Pearl Harbor attack by singing God Bless America, praying in silence and unveiling a monument with an image of the USS Arizona on it.
"Although appearing modest, this ceremony is performed each year, normally by survivors, as a tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedoms", said Master Chief Petty Officer Jeffrey Covington, Command Master Chief of JEB Little Creek-Fort Story.
The Corpus Christi Veterans band, Mary Carroll High School NJROTC, and the Corpus Christi Fire Department Pipes and drums will be featured during the ceremony. "I am proud to be a Pearl Harbor survivor".
"I think the unbelievable thing about Pearl Harbor is that it really helped unify America", said Triesler, who has researched the war and interviewed many WWII veterans. In East Texas, people honored the day by remembering those who lost their lives.
But this year was different because the event took place on the Milwaukee instead of at the Fleet Reserve on Mayport Road. Ganitch was on the battleship Pennsylvania's football team and getting ready for a championship game against the crew of the Arizona when Japan attacked.
"We heard a lot about how people loved how it was related to what was happening here and how everybody reacted in Richmond", said Price, Quill's operations manager.
"This attack by Japanese forces on the naval base caught the nation unaware", said Thaddeus Wright, USN at the podium.
"He was there day one until the end of it", the grandson said. "They're there as guardians of us".
The Historic Aviation Memorial Museum has a Pearl Harbor and World War II display. "As a woman", she said, "I can't go to war, and I refuse to send anyone else".
Jim Snow and Louis Thomas also took the time to remember their fathers who fought in World War II.
"What I've told them I wanted to do was that I would like his remains buried with his shipmates over in the Punchbowl in Hawaii, right above Pearl Harbor", Schoonover said.
