When the splendid full moon rises this weekend, she'll look a bit bigger and brighter than usual. The next closest supermoon, closer than the one that occurred previous year, is expected to occur in the 2030s, Space.com reported.
FOX 13 Chief Meteorologist Paul Dellegatto says, because it's so close to Earth, a super full moon looks about 7 percent bigger and about 16 percent brighter than an average full moon. But since the date didn't coincide with a full moon, it didn't qualify as a supermoon.
That's because the timing has to be just right. This is what makes the natural satellite appear bigger and brighter.
"The moon will reach its highest point above the horizon at midnight local time". The Moon takes about 27.32 days to orbit Earth.
The moon's average distance from the Earth is approximately 238,000 miles. The moon should sit near the constellation Taurus, though it shouldn't be hard to spot.
The term has been around since 1979 and it describes a moment when the moon is closest to the Earth. This changes where the Moon is in orbit during each full moon.
There are plenty of places around the US where you can enjoy the Supermoon as long as the sky is clear, even if just for a minute.
"Nevertheless, the "moon illusion" can be a dramatic effect, and with the moon rising so early, there will be ample opportunities to see its apparently huge face juxtaposed with the eastern skyline".
